iRacing Season 4 2026: Physics Islands, New Tire Model Cars, and Multi-Class Pace Cars

iRacing's August 2026 Development Update just dropped, and Season 4 is one of the biggest builds in years. Three rebuilt tracks, a new physics architecture, a reworked Sprint Car and MX-5, and the Valkyrie AMR-LMH headline a release that touches almost every corner of the sim. Here's what actually matters for setups and on-track performance.

Physics Islands: The Engine Change Under Everything

iRacing has multi-threaded the core physics update loop, an internal project called Physics Islands. The physics tick is now spread across available CPU threads instead of running on a single core. Single-car running should feel about the same, but in full-field races and large grids, CPU physics overhead drops by 50% or more.

This isn't a handling change on its own, but it's the foundation for future ones. iRacing has said this unlocks higher physics tick rates and tighter input sampling down the line. Nothing to adjust in a setup file today, but expect this groundwork to matter more as future seasons build on it.

New Tire Model Lands on the MX-5 and Sprint Car

Two mainstay cars get full rebuilds this season, and both move to iRacing's latest tire model.

The MX-5 has been re-engineered bumper to bumper: enhanced kinematic suspension, updated dampers, retuned engine and driveline, the new tire model, and an aero and damage model update aimed at more realistic bump drafting. iRacing is describing smoother slide recovery and closer door-to-door racing as the result. Every MX-5 setup needs re-validating against v1.3 baselines — nothing carries over cleanly with this much changed under the hood.

The pavement Sprint Car gets an even bigger overhaul: more power with a broader torque curve, reduced engine braking, the new tire model with updated construction and dimensions, reworked suspension geometry, updated hydraulic brakes, 2026 rulebook weight targets, and 1:1 garage adjustment limits. This is a from-scratch rebuild of a car with a devoted following, and it changes how the car should be driven, not just how it's set up.

Multi-Class Pace Cars: Cleaner Starts, Different Strategy Windows

Race Control now supports true multi-class starts, with a dedicated pace car per class and independent green flags for each field. This is soft-launching on select tracks, headlined by full support in the official IMSA series. Expect cleaner turn-one racing, but also different gap timing and yellow-flag strategy windows in multi-class events than you're used to. Worth watching closely in the first few weeks of IMSA racing on the new system.

Weather Testing: Re-Rolls Are Coming

iRacing is testing per-race and per-race-day weather re-rolls, along with higher rain-probability forecasts in select series, in response to ongoing community feedback on the dynamic weather system. No sweeping changes yet, but if you race a series selected for this test, come prepared for more forecast variability than before.

New and Rebuilt Tracks

Road America, Mid-Ohio, and the Milwaukee Mile are rebuilt from new laser scans and auto-added to owners' existing packages. Road America gains East and West bypass configs at Turn 5, and Milwaukee debuts a Roval-style Road config. Summit Point and Road Atlanta both get major art refreshes without layout changes, so lines stay the same but visual references will look different.

New Metal: Valkyrie, Caterhams, and Gen 4 Grand National

The Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR-LMH arrives after more than a year of development, built from real chassis data and direct manufacturer collaboration. Expect a demanding, high-downforce LMH with a distinct driving character versus the rest of the Hypercar field.

Caterham brings two cars in one package: the Academy for Class D and the 420R for Class C, both drafting-heavy, momentum-focused machines that reward smooth inputs over outright aggression.

Gen 4 Grand National joins the Gen 4 Cup package for free on patch day, and Gen 4 Cup and Grand National both receive a drafting model update worth checking your pack strategy against.

TL;DR

  • Season 4 ships with Physics Islands, a multi-threaded physics engine that cuts CPU overhead 50%+ in full-field races. No direct setup impact yet, but it's the base for future tick-rate improvements
  • MX-5 and pavement Sprint Car both get full rebuilds on iRacing's latest tire model — every setup for these two needs re-validating from scratch
  • Multi-class races get dedicated per-class pace cars and green flags, soft-launching with full IMSA support — expect cleaner starts and different strategy windows
  • Road America, Mid-Ohio, and Milwaukee Mile are rebuilt from new scans; Summit Point and Road Atlanta get art refreshes; layouts and lines are unchanged
  • New cars: Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR-LMH, Caterham Academy/420R, and the free Gen 4 Grand National; Gen 4 Cup and Grand National both get a drafting update
  • Weather re-rolls and higher-rain forecasts are being tested in select series — no service-wide change yet
